HRH The Crown Princess visits Greenland with the Mary Foundation during the period 29th to 31st

of August 2016 in connection with the conference "Domestic violence - a shared responsibility"

In Greenland, the Crown Princess opens the Mary Foundation conference "Domestic violence - a shared responsibility". The goal of the conference is to focus on violence and to strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation. More than 170 professionals from all over Greenland participate in the conference, including

staff from shelters, family centers and the police.

The Mary Foundation project "Kattunneq - Greenland shelters" was established in 2014 and aims to strengthen efforts in the Greenlandic shelters through upgrading and cooperation. Behind the project is the Mary Foundation, Danner, Greenland shelters, Dandelion Center, Department of Family, Gender Equality, Social Affairs and Justice, as well as the OAK Foundation Denmark.

During the visit to Greenland the Crown Princess also holds a series of meetings with the Greenlandic partners and visits some of the Mary Foundation's other activities in Greenland. The Crown Princess will among other things visit a child care center working with anti-bullying program "Kammagiitta - Free of Bullying" and visit the Nuuk shelter where Mary Foundation awards backpacks for the children. The Danish Radio news website has an article with the following headline:

Greenlandic Women: Royal Visit sends a Strong Message

Crown Priincess Mary visiting Greenland to spotlight violence against women in Greenland.

The two Greenlandic ladies, Arnajaraq Bertelsen and Dorte Møller Platuu from Nuuk, discuss the importance of CPM visiting Greenland. Arnajaraq appreciates the time CPM spends helping victims of violence. She characterizes CPM as a role model especially because CPM is a Danish woman.

"She is like a sister to us", states Arnajaraq Bertelsen.

The official language in Nuuk is Greenlandic.  Do Nuuk residents also speak Danish or English?  How is Princess Mary communicating with the children there?

Often in English, but some Greenlandic women (usually mature women) speak Danish. Only a few Danish women can speak Greenlandic (would be cool to be able to speak Greenlandic)

According to an article I read, the kids/young in Nuuk switch between Greenlandic and Danish.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I wonder how many do that. When I watch news reports and documentaries on tele, I more often hear Greenlandic than Danish. That's my primary source of knowledge
