HRH The Crown Prince on Tuesday, 27th of January, 2015 participates in the commemoration of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

The commemoration takes place on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camp, and as well as Crown Prince Frederik the Nordic royal houses are represented by HRH Crown Princess Victoria and HRH Crown Prince Haakon. The Polish president and survivors of the camp will also be present at the event.

70th anniversary will be marked in a number of countries and by the United Nations. In Denmark celebrations include the use of educational activities and are part of the teaching in schools. The purpose of the activities is to focus on the genocide and the ethical, social and political challenges that ensued from the genocide. The decision to have an annual commemoration in Denmark was taken in the Stockholm International Forum in January 2000, when heads of state from 47 countries adopted a declaration for the promotion of research, education and remembrance of the Holocaust.

On the 27th of January 1945, Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, which in the period 1941 to 1945 housed the prisoners, of which over one million lost their lives in the camp.
