I have noticed that Mary does not wear the big ruby parure to events where the visiting guests of honour are not wearing tiaras.

Yes, and IIRC, QM doesn't go for the flashiest of bling either.

Soon it's time to move inside for speeches.

The table decorations

Floral decorations at the gala banquet consist of a dense bouquet of azaleas, lilies and carnations which all come from Fredensborg Palace Gardens. The flowers are in yellow and golden hues with accents in silver, with white candles. So they harmonize with the colour of the Mexican Orders.

I see that the Queen's husband is referred to as HRH Prince Henrik now that he has retired (rather than HRH The Prince Consort).

He is no longer working beside the Queen in an 'on-duty' capacity. I guess that's the reasoning.

I noticed that Frederik wears a different sash as Mary & J&M.Does he has been given the higher rank because he is the heir?

Yes. The Order of the Aztec Eagle has several classes.

The collar is awarded to heads of state, which is why QM is not wearing a sash. Crown Prince Frederik is wearing the next step down class sash and star. CPMary, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie are wearing the third class sashes.

All explained at a Wiki page.....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Aztec_Eagle

This makes sense to me, as he is no longer working beside the Queen as her professional consort.

Is it just me, or were the police trying to restrain a protester during the visit yesterday?

http://dutchphotopress.com/event/2122-mexico-state-visit-denmark

Yes. that happened as the CPCouple and the Mexican delegation arrived at the Maritime Museum in the afternoon. It was a Swedish activist who was arrested after she threw off her top to reveal a message on her body.

DM article about it:

More about the change to Prince Henrik's title:

BB article

http://www.billedbladet.dk/kongelige/danmark/prinsgemalen-aendrer-titel

BB asked the Danish Royal Court about the reason for the change, and has the following information from Lene Balleby.

It is Prince Henrik himself who wished to change his title from Prince Consort to the more informal Prince Henrik. This happened in connection with his desire to retire.
"He thinks it is better suited to his current situation, where his official functions have declined", says the court's communications director, Lene Balleby to BB.
The court has long known the prince's wish, but the public has only now become aware of the change as the Mexican State Visit is his first official appearance since the decision was announced in the Queen's New Year speech.
