The event was the dinner to present the Badge of Honor for officers of the Air Force. The court is still in official mourning until March 14th but the dinner was held due to the importance of the tradition. It was started by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe's father King Frederik IX in 1953 and is always held March 11th on his birthday. The Badge is given out to officers for 25 years of service and rotates among the army, navy and air force every three years. Due to the official mourning all members of the Royal Family were wearing dark colors and the event was very subdued to honor the mourning.
