The Crown Princess has said ‘yes’ to join as a member of the newly established independent High-Level Commission that will provide guidance and advocate for meaningful follow-up to the commitments outlined in the Nairobi Statement on ICPD25 held in November 2019. The commitments highlight the UNFPA’s ‘three zeros ‘; zero unmet need for family planning, zero preventable maternal mortality and zero sexual and gender based violence.

The Nairobi Summit marked the 25th anniversary of the ICPD Programme of Action from Cairo in 1994. The ICPD Programme of Action was adopted by 179 governments and laid out a far-sighted plan for advancing human well-being that places human rights, including sexual and reproductive health and rights - which means the right to decide with whom and when to have children and how many -  at the center of the global development agenda. Denmark co-hosted the Nairobi Summit in 2019 along with the government of Kenya and UNFPA. The Crown Princess attended the Summit together with the Danish Minister for International Development, Rasmus Prehn and more than 8.300 representatives form governments, the private sector, organisations, academia, foundations, indigenous people and youth groups from 170 countries.

The new High-Level Commission will bring together high-level representatives from academia, research, civil societies, human rights activists, private sector, parliamentarians and youth leaders from around the world. The Co-Chairs are the former President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete and former Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean.

As a member of the ICPD25 High-Level Commission the Crown Princess will continue to advocate for gender equality and support efforts that ensure a world where women and girls have equal rights and equal opportunities, to the benefit of all.

Since 2010 The Crown Princess has been patron of UNFPA and has throughout many years been a passionate advocate in the fight for gender equality and the advancement of women and girls’ rights. The Crown Princess has also served as a member of the High-Level Task Force on ICPD.

The Crown Princess will take part in the virtual inaugural meeting on Thursday, 17 September 2020.

NEW YORK -- A new High-Level Commission of advocates, experts and activists was established today to help commitments to women’s health and rights made at the November 2019 Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 stay on track, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is blocking access to essential services, such as family planning and antenatal care

"So here is another photo of me in front of my computer 😊

Don’t know why, but I got a smile on my face while reading that phrase from Mary in her update from her virtual meeting today. Because it's very relatable! So many people sit at home behind their computers and work day after day in these lockdown times... and what else can you post: Other than another picture of yourself behind your computer. 😅

Besides that, it's a important case. The pandemic hits everywhere, but it hits extra hard at already very vulnerable people/places. One can fear that all the work for girls' and women's rights has gone a step back during this pandemic.

"Yesterday was International Day of the Midwife. An important day as we celebrate and acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of midwives all over the world. According to a new report the world is facing a shortage of about 900,000 midwives and results are too often tragic and leads to preventable loss of life. According to the report, universal coverage of midwifes could avert 67 per cent of maternal deaths, 64 per cent of newborn deaths and 65 per cent of stillbirths, saving an estimated 4.3 million lives per year.

This was one of the topics of today’s meeting in the UNFPA’s High Level Commission for ICPD25 Follow UP where we discussed in the Working Group how midwives are one of the most important factors in achieving zero maternal deaths. "
