Gathering of European Heirs in the Netherlands
Het Loo Palace in the central Netherlands' town of Apeldoorn is the gathering place this weekend for the heirs to the European thrones. Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima play host to their European colleagues this time for the latest in a series meetings which have become a fixture during the past decade. The purpose is to give those involved an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences. The Netherlands' couple attend the meeting for the last time before they ascend the Dutch throne next month.
Similar meetings occur between the royal courts at different levels (the lords chamberlain, the information departments, etc.), and the host location rotates between the countries.
Those present are Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima of the Netherlands, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Spain, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde of Belgium and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg. Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark is competing in Vasaloppet ski marathon in Sweden this weekend, so is unable to attend on this occasion.
