Since 1975, the Berlingske Foundation Prize has been awarded to someone who has done something unusual for the benefit of the Danish society.

The Berlingske Foundations justifies awarding the Prize this year to the Crown Princess in recognition of her distinguished and sustained efforts as patron of vulnerable groups in society.

The Berlingske Foundation traditionally distributes two awards in January each year - the Berlingske Foundation Award of Honour and the Berlingske Journalist Award.

This year Crown Princess Mary is the recipient of the Award of Honour, "in recognition of her distinguished and sustained efforts in Danish community service," according to the press release from the Berlingske Foundation, which makes particular reference to her work as patron of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups in society, which she has implimented several projects to help.

Feature article from Sunday's Berlingske Tidende

http://www.b.dk/nationalt/hun-har-ikke-blot-levet-op-til-forventningerne.-hun-har-overgaaet-dem

It's a subscription article, but can be read today for free (click on  Nej tak, jeg vil bare læse artiklen )

The introductory sentence reads:

"Tuesday Crown Princess Mary is presented with the Berlingske Foundation Prize in recognition of her work in the service of the Danish community. Thomas Larsen paints a portrait of the Crown Princess, who has used her unique role to support people who need attention."

"She has not only lived up to expectations. She has surpassed them"

Crown Princess Mary is donating her 100,000 Danish kroner in prize money to the Alliance against Bullying, a collaboration between Save the Children, Children's Rights and the Mary Foundation.

From Mary's speech:

"Whether it's about handling bullying, or ensuring that there will no longer be limits to being born a girl , or whether it's about something as large as the implementation of the UN 17 world goals - complex problems can not be solved alone and without understanding."

(I'm hoping kongehuset will publish the acceptance speech.)

Quote from address by chairman of the Berlingske Foundation:

"By her person and her dedication to serve the Crown Princess is a model not only for other role models, but for everyone with a commitment to the society in which we live ...

... Dear Princess Mary, The Berlingske Foundation extends a warm thank you to you for this great and selfless contribution to society and commitment to its weakest."

He then named numerous positions the Crown Princess holds in organisations such as Children's Aid Day, Mothers Help, the National Association for Mental Health and the National organization of Women's Crisis Centres.

Quotes from CPM's speech:

"Bullying is not about evil children, but the evil patterns, and therefore, bullying is combated by working with the culture and the strengthening of community - both in class, at school and in the surroundings ...

It has always been clear to me that if we are successful in creating positive and lasting change for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, it requires a deep understanding and insight into the problem. For example, the Advice for Life project sprangs from an understanding that economics is often used as a lever to retain women in abusive relationships. The need for a fundamental understanding may sound obvious, but it is often that we put responses into effect without having the full picture in mind ..."
