An important day as we celebrate and acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of midwives all over the world. According to a new report the world is facing a shortage of about 900,000 midwives and results are too often tragic and leads to preventable loss of life.According to the report, universal coverage of midwifes could avert 67 per cent of maternal deaths, 64 per cent of newborn deaths and 65 per cent of stillbirths, saving an estimated 4.3 million lives per year. This was one of the topics of today’s meeting in the UNFPA’s High Level Commission for ICPD25 Follow UP where we discussed in the Working Group how midwives are one of the most important factors in achieving zero maternal deaths.
