Thanks for the clips, Jema & Mitchell :P

Summary of article in Billed Bladet #45, 2008.

Trommedans for Dronningen - Drum-dance for the Queen.

Written by Annelise Weimann.

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik visited Tanzania in 1970. This time they visited as heads of state, so because of that and because Tanzania is main recipent of aid from Denmark they got a really big reception.

Tanzania is one of the countries south of Sahara where things are moving forward big time.

QMII & PH were received officially in the capital Dar-es-Salaam, in front of Karimjee Hall by president Jakaya Kikwete and lady Salma.

They arrived at the best possible time to Tanzania. In the beginning of the rainy season, and the colourful flowers blossomed as if they were paid to do it and combined with the colourful local costumes, the reception, which including dancing and singing was a big experience visually.

Apart from the aid, Danish companies are co-oporating with Tanzanian companies, which economially speaking is a boost.

As Margrethe is really into art, the visit naturally included a visit to an arts museum, Art Space. Margrethe was in her right element and had a long chat with the various artist, including Mwandale Mwanyekwa who has produced some - I honestly don't know what it is - sculpture-thingies. Actually chief of court Ove Ullerup in the end, almost had to drag Queen Margrethe away. There was, alas, an extensive schedule to meet.

The Regent couple arrived the day before the official reception, in order to find their feet after the long flight. (They are getting older). They went to the sea, where they boarded a traditional sailing ship, a two masted kotiya, which is an old type of merchant ship, sailing to and from India. Fortunately with an engine, or they wouldn't have gotten anywhere, because ships of this type can only sail with the wind coming from behind. That meant that the merchants were dependant of the monsoon winds.

It wasn't a measly ship, mind you! Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik were installed in the largest cabin onboard. In the old days, the cabin was used by the sultan and his hareem.

They didn't sail to India though, only to Sindia Island, a favourite target for snorkel divers. I understand however that the Regent Couple declined the opportunity to have a closer look at the coral reefs there.

Thus concludes BB's coverage of the first part of the visit to Tanzania.

Thousands of Masais recieved the Regent couple on the last day. And on this day it rained for the first time in three months. It couldn't be any better!

They also visited a hut (if that's the right word, some big hut!) for a large Masai family, seven official wives and 40 children! That fascinated the Queen a lot. She said it was very different to see such homes with your own eyes, rather than reading about it and seeing pictures.
