Crown Princess Mary and Crown Princess Mette-Marit participating this year in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Heligoland, which takes place on 8-9. May 2014 in Kristiansand, Norway. The Danish and Norwegian Crown Princess participates in the program on 9 May.
It was in Kristiansand that the Danish navy searched port after the Battle of Heligoland. Here we got the 55 wounded sailors in treatment and buried the 18 sailors who died during the battle.
In the presence of both the Norwegian and Danish royal family that mark the close ties that remain between Norway and Denmark.
The Navy has since the Battle of Heligoland annually honored the fallen by placing a wreath at the memorial in Kristiansand, but a few years ago the Marine Guard took over the responsibillity for the annual commemoration in cooperation with Helgoland Guild on behalf of the Navy.
HRH Princess Mary is a lieutenant in the Home Guard and has been a member since 2008.
