Queen Margrethe & Prince Henrik - part 7

Recommended Posts

Could I ask our resident video experts to keep an eye on the news segments on TV2?

The ones dealing about whether Prince Henrik ought to be given the title of king.

The government support party Danish Peoples Party has shot down any further debate on that!

The arguments are interesting however and it's also an example of how politicians raise a firm index finger towards Henrik. Enough of this! It's really as close to a dressing down of PH in public as I have ever seen a politician come up with.

I will translate the words said by Søren Espersen of that party, if you can find a clip for me.

Key words to look for: Henrik, konge, Dansk Folkeparti, Søren Espersen.

Oh dear! I hope this does not lead to another personal crisis for Prince Henrik and he flees Denmark for Chateau de Caix again!!!!!:bow2::beer2: A poll pubished on his birthday showed that he was unpopular...this whole discussion will drop him even further in public opinion!

This is a translation of the words by Søren Espersen. The political ideological spokesman of the Danish Peoples Party.

This is also very unusual, because this is a de facto public dressing down of Prince Henrik, while at the same time being a very clear refusal of any wishes Henrik may have in regards to be given a title as king or otherwise being granted him an official position that will make him an equal to the Monarch, in the same way a crown princess automatically become queen and will be addressed “Your Majesty”, which he is not.

Søren Espersen is just not any politician voicing his opinion. As the Danish Parliament is composed today, he represents decisive political influence and what he is basically telling (actually ordering!) Prince Henrik – in public – is: “As long as this government is in power, you will NOT get the title of king, so forget it! We don’t want to hear more of this, so shut up! You are damaging the reputation of the DRF”.

Søren Espersen:

- “And if we continue the discussion about changing/reforming the monarchy as an institution then we are well on the way to the path of abolishing the monarchy altogether and we, in Danish Peoples Party, will not be a part of that”.

- “Of course the DRF will not proceed with this utterly weird/odd discussion, which in reality only make people smile/laugh of the DRF, and not least of Prince Henrik and that I think is a pity. And I’m sure that after today, when we have so strongly and clearly said that we will not be a part of this, then this discussion has ended/been forgotten and we will also encourage the Prince to not bring it up again”.

I cannot remember hearing a politician with this amount of political influence behind him, scolding a member of the DRF so clearly before!

A little background:

The government consists of two parties: the Conservatives, who are positive towards Henrik’s wish and the Liberals, who have declined Henrik’s wish. That government is supported by and is in power because of the Danish Peoples Party.

The opposition in the Parliament is cautiously and lukewarm positive towards Henrik’s wish. On the condition that the DRF put up a formal request for it.

The PM, Lars Løkke, has not said anything and I very much doubt he will. Instead he is letting the Danish Peoples Party speak for him, as is happening in this case. Of that I am in no doubt whatsoever!

Because the Danish Peoples Party yesterday expressed a hesitant attitude towards this. Today the viewpoint is very clear and uncompromising. – So someone contacted the leader of the Danish Peoples Party, Pia Kjærsgaard, requesting her to take care of that matter. Guess who that someone is most likely to be? – The PM!

That keeps the government from having to confront the DRF directly. Made so much more complicated because the leader of the Conservatives, Lene Espersen (I really have problems taking her and that party seriously!), has openly supported Henrik in this matter.

One of the most important jobs of the PM is to protect and defend all members of the DRF. Also when a member is about to screw up.

No, that the PM should be behind DPP's statement it just your guess. The Danish Peoples Party are perfectly capable of doing that on thier own, as they often do. The PM's party The Liberals (Venstre), through thier political spokesperson, allready yesterday(as the only party) said a clear NO to P Henrik being titled King. Anyway, I hope P Henrik reads Danish newspapers!:-)

Hi, all;

I've started up the Speaker's Corner in the new Forum since we have a really good topic about monarchy....in general....and specifically about the Danish monarchy.

You can add and/or move your remarks here there if you like.

Ripping good topic. I guess we should thank Prince Consort Henrik.

If not by direct request, then certainly in accordance with the, shall we say, wishes of the PM. That is not just a mere guess.

You know just as well as I about the animosity between the Conservatives and the Danish Peoples Party.

You also know about the need and intention of the Conservative party leader, Lene Espersen to profile the party.

This is yet another opportunity for the Danish Peoples Party to knock the Conservatives on the head and on top of that profile themselves. - Ending the discussion.

Lars Løkke doesn't have to as PM and head of the Liberals to use the whip on the Conservatives. He can just point at Danish Peoples Party and say: "Ain't me who shot down that baloon. No majority. Too bad".

Oh yes, the PM is pretty delighted about this! And if Pia Kjærsgaard, the leader of the Danish Peoples Party, haven't already told him, she certainly will: "You owe me one, Lars"!
