Literally two weeks from today there is a new monarch and consort, a new Crown Prince and a new second in line.  Wow. 2024 is going to be a very interesting year to follow.

I do wonder if there will be any kind of ascension banquet given that this transition is not due to the passing of the precious monarch.  It will be interesting to follow the updates.

Nothing new here. The photo in the article is not of Frederik VIII Palace...

"Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary will live in their current mansion, Frederik 8th's Palace, where King Frederik 10th will rule from, just as his maternal grandfather, King Frederik 9th, did in his time with Queen Ingrid at his side."

https://www.kongehuset.dk/en/news/changes-in-the-royal-house-of-denmark’s-leadership

In connection with the accession of the new king on 14 January 2024, a number of changes in the leadership of The Royal House of Denmark will be made.

The current Chief of the Court of TRH The Crown Prince and The Crown Princess, Christian Schønau, assumes the position of Lord Chamberlain of The Royal House of Denmark on 14 January. Christian Schønau, who has a master of law degree, has been Chief of Court since 2010. Before his career in The Royal House of Denmark, the new Lord Chamberlain was a department chief in the Ministry of the Interior and Health and the Ministry of Social Affairs, among other things.

Christian Schønau takes over the position from Kim Kristensen, who has served as Lord Chamberlain since 2021. Before that, Kim Kristensen was The Royal House of Denmark’s Master of Ceremonies from 2012. Kim Kristensen will continue in a position as Chief of Court of the newly established Court of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe.

At the same time, Cabinet Secretary Henning Fode is leaving after 16 years of service. Her Majesty The Queen expresses her warmest appreciation for Henning Fode’s attention to his work as Cabinet Secretary. The position of cabinet secretary will not be filled again, and the cabinet secretary’s duties will henceforth be carried out by the Lord Chamberlain.

The Royal House of Denmark’s Master of Ceremonies, Lasse Harkjær, will leave his current position on March 1st to begin as Chief of Staff in the Court of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe.

From March 1st the new Master of Ceremonies will be Commodore Anders Friis. Anders Friis comes from a command position in the Defence Command.

https://www.kongehuset.dk/en/news/background-on-succession-to-the-throne

.....

"In Denmark, the tradition up to the present has been that the succession to the throne takes place upon the death of the sovereign, as was the case most recently in 1972. In these instances, the succession occurs the moment the sovereign dies.

The upcoming succession to the throne will be different. This time, the succession will first take place during the meeting of the Council of State at the moment The Queen has signed a declaration of her abdication.

HRH The Crown Prince will thus arrive at Christiansborg Palace as a crown prince and leave it as King. Likewise, HRH The Crown Princess will arrive as a crown princess and depart as Queen. HRH Prince Christian will leave Christiansborg Palace as Crown Prince (heir to the throne).

Upon the succession to the throne, the new sovereign takes charge of all of the functions which, according to the constitution, are incumbent on the head of state."

After the throne succession on 14 January 2024, decisions will be made over several months about which of the Crown Prince Couple’s and HM The Queen’s patronages will be continued and the allocation thereof.

Until then, all of the patronages and honorary duties which prior to now have been attended to by the Crown Prince Couple and HM The Queen will cease.

An article somewhere mentioned that King Frederik and Queen Mary would be referred to as "Kongeparret" (King Couple - direct translation), like Frederik 9. & Queen Ingrid were, not "Regentparret" (Regent Couple)  like QM and PH.

Is there an equivalent in other royal families? If you do a search for "kongeparret", you find lots of articles about the

previous Kongeparret. I guess we'll find out in the official calendar entries, if not before that.

I wonder what the difference is. Wht QMII and PH were known one way and Frederik and Mary are reverting back to his grandparents.

I've never noticed how the royal couples of like Sweden and Norway are referred as.

Maybe because if they did Queen couple it would be dronningparet and thay sounds weird.

Any idea as to the attire which will be worn?

Frederick:  Naval uniform? White tie?

Mary/QMII:  Long dresses or day attire?

Do we know if Christian and/or the other children will attend?

I think Isabella and the twins will appear on the balcony with their parents and Christian after the proclamation.

The Court has released two portraits to be used in connection with the change of throne.

Change of throne (kongehuset.dk)

The photo of Queen Margrethe was taken in 2021.  It was released in Nov 2021 to mark her upcoming Golden Jubilee. The photo was taken in the Dome Hall, at Fredensborg Castle by Per Morten Abrahamsen.

The photo of Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary was released in January 2022 ahead of Crown Princess Mary's 50th Birthday. The photo was taken by Hasse Nielsen at the couple's home Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg.

I wonder if after the proclamation Mary will join Frederik on the balcony.  IIRC, Henrik joined QMII after she was proclaimed.  Fingers crossed the weather is good for the carriage ride!

"The couple's other children retain their princess and prince titles, but they are not completely passed over when it comes to new distinguished titles.

Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine will all become Knights of the Order of the Elephant the second their father takes the throne."

"According to the statutes of the Order of Elephants, the children of the lord of the order, i.e. the regent, are knights of the order. This means that as soon as the crown prince becomes king, he also becomes lord of the order and his children become knights of the Order of the Elephant."

"According to royal house expert Jon Bloch Skipper, it will probably be a while before Prince Christian's siblings can wear the unique order. Even if they are made a Knight of the Order of the Elephant, they will most likely not be presented with the insignia of the Order of the Elephant, including the elephant, ribbon and breast star, until they reach the age of 18."

Interesting.  So they become members of the order automatically but have to wait for the sash and insignia.

I wonder if/when Mary will be made Commander of the Danneborg...I think that's the right name.  And if Christian will as well now that he's Crown Prince.

HM The Queen will be able to be installed as acting regent

Following the Council of State on 14 January 2024, HM The Queen can be installed as acting regent. As acting regent, The Queen will be able to perform duties as head of state when both TRH The Crown Prince and Prince Christian are prevented from doing so after 14 January, for example during stays abroad.

Already, TRH The Crown Princess, Prince Joachim and Princess Benedikte can assume the function of acting regent and thus handle the duties as head of state.
