There is something unresolved in how this was handled. But then again IMO, the decision to retire, was probably not entirely rational and therefore difficult to explain in an interview. This happened in connection with his desire to retire. "He thinks it is better suited to his current situation, where his official functions have declined", says the court's communications director, Lene Balleby to BB. The court has long known the prince's wish, but the public has only now become aware of the change as the Mexican State Visit is his first official appearance since the decision was announced in the Queen's New Year speech. ~~ My own thoughts are a bit confused. Prince Henrik is 81 years old and it's understandable that be would wish to reduce his official workload, or even retire from official duties altogether. But his decision to no longer use the style 'Prince Consort' sends an ambiguous message. It leaves room for many different interpretations. A consort is defined as "a wife, husband, or companion, in particular the spouse of a reigning monarch".
